I am a meteorologist, but I don't play one on TV.

Readers who want the truth about climate change should do a Web search on the Vostok and EPICA ice cores. These show eight major global climate shifts over the past 740,000 years, with large fluctuations of CO2, methane and temperature.

Truth be told, without the steady increase of all three for the last 18,000 years, no one would be living on the Connecticut coast.

The pre-global-warming coastline was 50 miles south of Long Island, and Connecticut was under 1,300 to 3,300 feet of ice.

It turns out Al Gore and the United Nations (with an assist from the media), did a little too vociferous a job smearing anyone who disagreed with them as "deniers." The backlash has brought the scientific debate roaring back to life in Australia, Europe, Japan and even, if less reported, the U.S.

Climate will put global warming on ice

“The relationship (between atmos­pheric carbon dioxide and global tem­perature “is very complicated. But there is one relationship that is far more powerful than all the others, and it is this: When there is more carbon dioxide, the temperature gets warmer.”


This statement by former Vice President Al Gore in “An Inconvenient Truth” is perhaps one of the most far-reaching statements of recent times, one that will have a profound ef­fect on the world’s economy in the fu­ture.

As a physical scientist and college professor, I am compelled to correct his statement slightly. I believe he meant to say, “There is one relation­ship that is far more powerful than all the others, and it is this: When the tem­perature gets warmer, there is more CO2.” This statement is consistent with the graphs Mr. Gore presented in his documentary, graphs that were based on hundreds of thousands of years of ice-core data.

Mr. Gore is absolutely correct when he points out atmospheric CO2 has been increasing and decreasing along with global temperature for at least the last 400,000 years; the atmosphere once was about 90 percent CO2. How­ever, he intentionally and mistakenly implies CO2 causes global tempera­ture to increase and decrease, and that is inconsistent with any known scien­tific data.

If you examine the graphs described by Mr. Gore, you will see the level of CO2 varies in a controlled way. So what is controlling CO2?

Certainly, Mr. Gore doesn’t believe human activities have been controlling CO2 for the last 400,000 years. It’s cu­rious he did not mention this in his documentary.

It is true Mr. Gore is not a trained scientist, but any person with half a brain can understand the behavior of CO2. I am surprised Mr. Gore didn’t look into that more carefully before he published his theory. Perhaps he had other motives.

Any good scientist would find that while CO2 is indeed a greenhouse gas (and, by the way, not a very important one at only 0.04 percent of the atmos­phere), its real claim to fame is it is very soluble in water, much more so than most other gases. In fact, it is so soluble, it can make water fizz. He seemed to have overlooked this point.

That the earth’s surface is about 70 percent water should have something to do with the comings and goings of CO2. All the research upon which his graphs were based clearly shows the temperature of the globe changes be­fore the CO2 changes.

So Mr. Gore’s statement has the tail wagging the dog. As the temperature of the oceans increases, dissolved CO2 is less soluble and is released to the at­mosphere. As the temperature of the oceans decreases, CO2 redissolves.

For the last 200 years or so, our oceans have been warming rapidly. At­mospheric CO2 has rapidly increased accordingly. As long as we have oceans, it is impossible to raise the level of CO2 in the atmosphere significantly.

The excess CO2 eventually will dissolve in the oceans, as it has been doing since water liquefied on this planet. This rap­id increase in ocean temperature just happened to coincide with our Industri­al Revolution, but that’s not significant because over 200 years, some things are bound to coincide.

Does burning fossil fuels and breathing contribute to the CO2 in the atmosphere? Absolutely. But the amount is insignificant compared with the amount released by our oceans when the temperature of the oceans in­creases. Consequently, CO2 is an un­controllable, benign gas that increases and decreases as the temperature of the oceans increases and decreases.

So if the temperature of our oceans controls the amount of CO2 in our at­mosphere, why are we spending all this time and money trying to limit CO2 emissions? Need I answer that?

The progressive movement has been creating one crisis after another since the 1920s to gain control and power.

The “global-warming crisis” is beauti­ful because it most likely will be the one that finally destroys the country.

And our citizens stupidly keep voting into office those people who admit, “Let’s not let a good crisis go to waste.” Maybe it’s time to “unvote” them be­fore they really do serious, irreversible damage to the environment.

Al Gore keeps telling us the earth is abnormally warm, but I can’t seem to find anyone who actually knows what the normal temperature should be.

Well, here’s something you can take to the bank: I have been studying global temperature cycles for years, and my research indicates in the very near fu­ture we will be wishing for global warming. Don’t run out and buy extra overcoats yet. Contrary to common be­lief, climate change takes place over thousands of years. But here’s the bad news (or maybe good news, if you are a polar bear).

First, it is moronic to try to predict what will happen to climate by looking at a 200-year period. It’s too short a span, and the error is greater than the 200-year period Mr. Gore cites in his documentary. However, within the next 1,000 years, inhabitants of this planet will begin to experience a real temperature drop of at least 2 C. With­in the next 5,000 years, most of North America will be under a mile or so of glacier ice. Growing food will be a challenge. And within the next 10,000 years, average global temperature will have dropped 8 to 10 C. By then, the ocean between Alaska and Siberia will have frozen, and polar bears will be celebrating.

The earth has spent about 300,000 of the past 400,000 years at temperatures we refer to as “ice age.” On a global time scale, the periods of “warmth,” where we are now, are short, usually about 20,000 years. My guess is what we refer to as “ice age” is the “normal” temperature of the globe, and she’s just itching to get back there.
